We put pen to paper to write letters, jot down notes, or leave a short message for a loved one: writing instruments such as ballpoint pens, rollerball gel pen, fountain pens and pencils are indispensable in this respect and one couldn’t imagine everyday life without them. And everyone has their very own favourite pen.

LEUCHTTURM1917 is reviving the Drehgriffel from the 1920s. The name “Drehgriffel”  is a German compound noun that directly translates as twist stylus. Its characteristic design makes this writing instrument truly distinctive: a hexagonal body with a pointed tip, which, like the twist button, is in a contrasting colour. The Drehgriffel is made from  precision-milled aluminium and brass, then painted and sealed. It uses a spring-loaded  twist mechanism.

Smooth writing with fine contours. Inspired by the fine Asian art of writing with its filigree typeface made up of detailed characters, the Drehgriffel Nr. 1 pen now comes with a Japanese 0.5mm black gel pen refill.

For easy and flowing handwriting

Gel ink has a higher viscosity than standard ballpoint pen ink. An advantage that ensures easy and flowing handwriting. Giving a line width of only 0.5mm, the Japanese gel pen refill creates particularly fine writing with a clear outline. Even with a fine stroke, the ink flows very evenly via the pen tip onto the paper.

This is due to a ceramic ball bearing which dictates the perfect flow of ink in the tip. The interaction between the ceramic’s smooth surface and the precise positioning of the ball bearing ensures a constant flow of ink despite the fact that very little ink is released.

LEUCHTTUMRM1917 has long been committed to providing high-quality paper. But there was also an increasing urge to find a special writing instrument. After all, we need both, in order to put our thoughts on paper. This writing instrument was intended to be something truly special – the perfect combination of an iconic design and a distinctive writing experience. And the Drehgriffel (Dreh [dre:] Griffel ['ɡrɪfl̩]) was the result. The deliberate use of old German script of the word mark is playfully juxtaposed with the contrasting modern design. It is basically new – and yet a classic.

The Drehgriffel (Dreh [dre:] Griffel ['ɡrɪfl̩]) Nr. 1 is a pen made of precision-milled aluminium and brass, which is then finished and sealed. It works on a spring-loaded turning mechanism. The refill can be replaced very easily by simply unscrewing the twist button.

The top-quality pen is made of brass and aluminium; both the tip and twist button can be unscrewed.
